More details about Citrix/Intel “Project Independence”

A while back, Citrix and Intel announced a partnership for a client-side bare metal hypervisor called “Project Independence”. A few more details are starting to leak out. Gabe van Zanten was recently at VMworld Europe and got to speak with Joel Stocker from Citrix about Citrix’s new client hypervisor. Gabe wrote a nice articles detailing some of these findings. Some interesting things noted in the article are:

  • The hypervisor runs a parent/primary partition that has direct access to the hardware (kind of like Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V)
  • Dual boot between the primary OS with hypervisor and the primary OS without a hypervisor is possible.
  • VMs are managed via a web interface on the primary partition.
  • It is possible to “fast switch” between VMs using hot keys.
  • You can publish applications from a VM into the primary partition via ICA (like a seamless application in Terminal Services/XenApp)
