Have you tried VMware’s new ThinApp/Thinstall? Try it out for free!

VMware's ThinApp

Until recently, I hadn’t heard of VMware’s ThinApp. When I heard a rumor about it, I did a little more research to find out what this new VMware offering is and what it can do for you. Here is what I found out:

- Thinstall/Thinapp provides for application virtualization and application streaming

- With Thinstall, you can package entire applications that run, as a single executable, as a regular user, on another system.

- This provides seperation of the application from the operating system.

- Application virtualization is an important part of desktop virtualization

- Application virtualization helps to improve desktop stability and reduce end user support calls

- There are no more agents, no more application conflicts, no more application installations, single executable for every Windows OS, easier deployment of patches

- With application virtualization, you can even run a large complex app from a USB stick, let’s say!

- Overall, Thinstall allows you to reduce the time needed to maintian and support applications.

You can download a free beta of VMware Thinstall and watch a free 1 hour video covering how it works, at the VMware Thinstall website.

I have been playing with ThinApps and I am absolutely addicted. I am going to thin-ize (is that a word?) all my apps on my home PC now (Quicken, iTunes, etc). One cool use is to have a ThinApp’d Firefox on my USB stick with all my personal links (bank, social networks, etc) so that I can run it on any PC with all my links and settings intact.

Here’s something you should try. Go to www.thindownload.com. They have thin-ized a bunch of open source apps (FireFox, OpenOffice, etc) and makes them available for free download.

    Enjoy! your pal, Esteban.
