Microsoft has 10+ Virtualization videos in their free TechNet “How Do I?” site. These videos cover everything from Introduction to Hyper-V, P2V conversion/migration, virtualization assessment/planning, and various ways to use System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).
I recently read a VMware community thread about a new 3rd part VMware VCB GUI called VCB Management Console (vcbMC). We all know that VCB is not easy for new users to use and that I GUI interface sure would be nice.
To me, this sounds like an alternative to the future VMware Data Recovery as the vcbMC is free (today).
How do you manage your VMware ESX Virtual Infrastructure when you aren’t at the office? Well, you aren’t using “dial up”, are you? While I may use my home Internet connection and a VPN or wireless at the local coffee shop, much of the time, I end up using my cellular data Internet connection.
The world of virtualization management is a confusing one. There are lots of players out there. I suspect you are like me and you don’t have the time to demo all the different options. If that’s the case, then why not rely on your fellow VirtualizationAdmin.com readers?
Well, our readers have voted and they selected NetIQ’s AppManager as the best virtualization management suite. See for yourself, below. I plan on checking out AppManager myself!
As VMware ESXi doesn’t have the COS (service console operating system), it has been a challenge for 3rd party software vendors to adopt their products to work with it.
Veeam has a very strong virtualization suite of products and recently 3 of their major products were announced to be compatible with VMware ESXi.
Their 3 products that recently announced support for ESXi are:
Fast SCP 3.0 for ESX and ESXi - one of Veeam’s original products, the FREE FastSCP used to securely transfer files to and from your ESX (and now) & ESXi Server
Veeam Backup 3.0 Update 1- support for ESX and ESXi backup, replication, file level recovery, de-duplication, and VCB integration
Did you notice the two new Virtualization videos here at VirtualizationAdmin.com ? If not, you need to check them out (especially because one of them was created by me).
In my new article over at SearchVMware.com, I cover 5 options for connecting your VMware Guest VMs to CD or DVD media. This is a common question I get from those new to virtualization, no matter what virtualization platform they are using.
Of course the article covers physical media but also various types of “virtual media” like creating ISO files and an ISO library of your commonly used OS and Application CDs and DVDs.
I was reading a great article by Rich over at VMetc.com about how to sniff network traffic on VMware ESX vSwitches. To me, one of the benefits of ESX virtual switches (and now distributed virtual switches / dvswitches) is that you have this virtual switch that, you would think, would provide so many benefits to network admins in terms of performing easier network analysis.
This should be especially true with the new dvswitch and the Cisco Nexus 1000V from Cisco. If you think about a physical switch today where you want to do traffic analysis, the first thing you are likely going to setup to use a protocol analyzer (sniffer) is SPAN or RSPAN. These are what allow you to see traffic from all ports on a switch, all traffic in a VLAN, or all traffic across multiple switches, in your sniffer.
It should be true that VMware’s new dvswitch, connecting vnics and vswitches across all ESX hosts, would make sniffing traffic on the virtual network even easier. When those are released, we will find out!
