What is Windows Azure?

Microsoft is promoting the heck out of their new cloud computing solution - Azure - right now but there are still a lot of questions about it.
Here is a simple video that attempts to explain how Azure works, in plain English….

The mechanics of VMware GO by Eric Siebert

This week I will have a new video released where I cover how to use VMware GO (stay tuned to this blog for the video).

Recently, I saw a great new article from Eric Siebert of vSphere-Land.com who covers, behind the curtains and under the sheets exactly what makes VMware GO do all the things that it can do. This is great stuff so I hope you will checkout the following post from Eric, before you try out VMware GO for yourself.

Save a ton of money in your electric bill with DPM (reviewed by Jason Boche)

I am totally sold on the power of VMware’s Distributed Power Management (DPM) and how it can can your company a fortune in electricity usage for the datacenter.

Jason Boche (VCP, vExpert) of http://www.boche.net/blog wrote a recent blog post covering how he, personally, had saved a ton of money by deploying DPM in his home lab. He also covered the Power Management Technology feature that saves even more $.

You can read his full post at-

Also, if you haven’t see it already, checkout this YouTube video on DPM - so cool!

“VMware Data Center in a Box” using VMware Player

There have been a number of blog posts about how to use VMware Workstation to create a “VMware Data Center in a box” but I saw this new blog post about doing the same thing but using VMware Player.

I thought this post was very cool because, as you know, VMware Player is completely free. You could download the eval of vSphere for a free 60-day eval and this “VMware Datacenter” is completly free for 60-days - pretty cool.

On my Christmas List - vSphere Quick Reference

Duncan Epping of Yellow-Bricks.com and Thomas Bryant just released a new vSphere book:

vSphere 4.0 Quick Start Guide

This book is definitely on my Christmas list as Duncan is such a guru and I am a sucker for any quick reference guides!

I hope you will pick one up or put it on your Christmas list too!

Scott Lowe on Understanding NPIV and NPV

When Scott Lowe posts about SAN storage and virtualization, people listen (and that includes me).

This week, Scott posted a very cool article this week in order to provide us some Understanding on the difference between NPIV and NPV.

These are some very complex and fascinating new technologies that are in dire need of Scott’s explanation. Read the full article at:

VIDEO: What you need to know about vCloud Express

Cloud Computing is all the rage. Companies are trying to get you to move anything and everything to “the cloud”. VMware is working on their vCloud API but that is still in beta. In the meantime, they have released their vCloud Express solution and, along with a number of partner companies, you can either try out VMware’s implementation of Cloud Computing for either a low cost or for free.

Checkout my video that explains VMware’s vCloud Express and how it can help you. Additionally, I demonstrate the free BlueLock.com vCloud Express offering.

VIDEO: Installing the vSphere Client in Windows 7

While the vSphere Client does install fine in Windows 7, it is when you attempt to connect to your vCenter Server that you discover there is a problem. VMware doesn’t officially support the vSphere Client under Windows 7 but there is a workaround to make it work. In this video, I cover how to get the vSphere Client working in Windows 7, step by step. You can download the special system.dll file that is needed here.
